High School Online
Learning Hub

Introduction

Learn how I revitalized an online high school learning library with iterative, theory-driven design, ensuring interactive resources that better support students and peer mentors.

My Role and Team

  • My Role: Instructional Designer, Project Lead, and Liaison with stakeholders (SMEs).

  • Team: Supervised a design assistant, shaping the pages’ structure and visual design.

Way of Thinking

I used a user-centered, iterative approach—collecting feedback from student team members and leveraging best practices in minimal text and interactive elements to keep resources accessible and engaging.

The Problem

Outdated note-taking page with static content and minimal engagement.

The original online library offered static, fragmented resources that did little to engage students or facilitate effective peer mentor support—resulting in missed opportunities for academic and interpersonal growth.

Design Story

  • I identified significant pain points including unclear navigation, underutilized materials, and insufficient support for peer mentor-student interactions through stakeholder feedback and research.

Complexity

  • The challenge was to transform eight disparate Canvas pages into a cohesive, interactive resource that not only enhances student learning but also actively supports peer mentors in guiding and engaging students.

The Designed Solution

I redesigned eight dedicated Canvas pages—from a welcoming Home page and Getting Started with Online Learning to specialized sections on Reading, Test-Taking, Writing, Study Skills, Learner Wellness, and Learner Motivation—to form an engaging, interactive resource hub.

Design Decisions

  • Iterative Prototyping: Leveraged continuous stakeholder feedback, including input from peer mentors, to refine the design.

  • Enhanced Visual Hierarchy & Navigation: Established a clear, intuitive page structure that organizes key academic skills and peer mentor support elements, guiding users through the content with minimal text and impactful visuals.

  • Enhanced Peer Mentor Engagement: Integrated interactive elements and clear guidance to empower peer mentors to effectively utilize and supplement the content during mentorship sessions.

The Result

While the current design is the second draft pending a third iteration, it effectively demonstrates a theory-driven approach to transforming static content into a dynamic, interactive learning environment that supports both academic success and robust peer mentor engagement.

  • Impact: Illustrates how creative, iterative instructional design can revitalize digital learning spaces and enhance the mentor-student relationship.

  • Outcome: A comprehensive redesign prototype that lays the foundation for a scalable learning library—ready for further refinement and eventual implementation.
