BYU Online Resources

Introduction

See how I reorganized and modernized BYU Online’s resource library to create a more accessible, interactive hub of academic and wellness support for students.

My Role and Team

  • My Role: Instructional Designer, Project Lead, and Liaison with stakeholders (SMEs).

  • Team: Supervised a design assistant, shaping the pages’ structure and visual design.

Way of Thinking

I used a user-centered, iterative approach—collecting feedback from student team members and leveraging best practices in minimal text and interactive elements to keep resources accessible and engaging.

The Problem

The outdated Canvas page lacked clarity, structure, and engagement tracking.

The BYU Online resource library was scattered and overwhelming, hindering quick student access to crucial support materials.

Design Story

  • After analyzing user needs, I discovered inconsistent layouts and duplicated content across multiple pages. There was also no way to track user engagement due to the public nature of the Canvas course.

Complexity

  • The project required aligning diverse stakeholder goals—student engagement, accessibility, and a clear navigation plan—while meeting an extensive range of learner needs.

The Result

Though primarily an internal BYU Online update, the redesign highlights a creative, user-centered approach to solving complex instructional challenges and tracking user engagement for iterative improvements.

  • Impact: Significantly improved navigation and user experience. Students can now find relevant content quickly, boosting both academic performance and confidence. BYU Online may now also track user engagement through web analytics.

  • Outcome: A cohesive set of Canvas pages that effectively integrates soft skills, academic strategies, and wellness resources—serving as a lasting reference for BYU Online students.

The Designed Solution

I redesigned the Canvas pages dedicated to soft skills and academic resources (e.g., Time Management, Study Skills, Mental Health Tools) with a streamlined interface and integrated interactive tools and web analytics.

Design Decisions

  • Streamlined Navigation: Created a unified layout with clear menus and bite-sized content to reduce cognitive load.

  • Interactive Content: Incorporated Genially and embedded videos for hands-on practice and immediate feedback.

  • Implementation of Web Analytics: Researched and integrated WIX web pages to begin collecting data for future iterations and improvements.

  • Stakeholder Feedback Loop: Held regular review sessions with SMEs and peers to refine layout, ensure alignment with academic goals, and improve accessibility.
