English Second Language Tutor
Onboarding Prototype
Introduction
Explore how I developed a blended training solution that incorporates role-play activities and scenario-based modules to streamline ESL tutor onboarding.
My Role and Team
-
My Role: Instructional Designer, Developer, and Project Manager.
-
Team: Worked alongside classmates who served as peer reviewers.
Way of Thinking
I focused on user-centered approaches and iterative refinement while leveraging established theories (Gagné’s Nine Events, ARCS) to ensure engaging and effective learning.

The Problem
Understanding the problem through a topic analysis
New ESL tutors lacked a structured method for greeting learners, assessing language proficiency, and tailoring lesson plans—leading to inconsistent experiences and missed learning opportunities.
Design Story
-
I analyzed common pain points to find confusion about resources, inconsistent active listening, and inadequate follow-up.
Complexity
-
The challenge was to unify offline role-plays and digital modules into one seamless experience.

The Designed Solution
I created a blended training prototype combining scenario-based eLearning modules in Articulate Storyline with in-person role-play activities to address each pain point.
Design Decisions
-
Concrete-to-Abstract Sequencing using Gagné’s Nine Events to build skills progressively (e.g., sign-ins → active listening → tailored lessons).
-
ARCS Model for motivation, capturing attention with realistic scenarios and fostering confidence through immediate feedback.
-
Job Aids & Directories to reduce cognitive load and provide quick references during tutoring sessions.
Assessing Proficiency Through Scenario-Based Training

The Result
Though hypothetical, the prototype demonstrates a cohesive, creative design for solving the tutor onboarding problem.
-
Impact: Showcases how theory-driven instructional design can streamline processes and boost tutor confidence.
-
Outcome: A fully-developed Storyline prototype, role-play guidelines, and quick-reference tools that can be adapted for real-world ESL centers.
