The Problem

User Story: Aligning Faculty Training with Real Needs

Newly assigned Faculty Directors often receive scattered information on safety, logistics, and financing—causing confusion and risking inconsistent student experiences abroad.

Design Story

  • Began as a robust, reference-rich course but shifted mid-project to a concise, 45-minute mandatory training due to stakeholder changes.

  • Worked closely with stakeholders and program admins to ensure alignment with BYU policies.

Complexity

  • Late-stage scope changes meant pivoting from a large Canvas resource to a short, mandatory module.

  • Needed to keep stakeholders engaged, manage shifting deadlines, and ensure high design quality under tight time constraints.

The Designed Solution

A streamlined digital course in Canvas, integrating short scenarios, quizzes, and quick-reference job aids.

Design Decisions

  • Mandatory & Accessible: Chose Canvas over Workday to accommodate all faculty, including those on leave.

  • Scenario-Based Micro-Modules: Tailored to highlight sub-department essentials within a tight 45-minute format.

  • Agile & Iterative: Used a Kanban board in Microsoft Planner to adapt quickly, dropping non-critical content and focusing on core needs.
